taguard.inBluetooth Beacon vs GPS Tracker vs RFID Tags: Choosing the Right Asset Tracking Technology
🤔 "Should I just use GPS trackers for everything?" is the question we hear most from facility managers evaluating asset tracking for the first time —
and the honest answer depends entirely on where your assets live.
🛰️ GPS/4G trackers: excellent outdoors and for vehicles covering long distances, but they drain batteries fast, need clear sky visibility, and are
overkill (and expensive) for assets that never leave a building.
📡 Passive RFID: cheap per tag and great for one-time scans at a gate or dock door, but it can't give you continuous live position — you only know an
asset passed a reader, not where it is right now.
🔵 BLE beacons: the sweet spot for indoor, continuous, battery-efficient tracking — a single beacon can report position, motion state, temperature and
even shock/fall events for months to years on one battery, and gateways cost far less than a dense RFID reader grid.
🧮 Our rule of thumb: assets that roam between buildings or across a city → GPS/4G. Assets scanned at fixed checkpoints only → RFID. Assets that need
continuous indoor location, condition and movement history → BLE beacons.
🏭 Many of our pharma and automotive clients end up with a hybrid: BLE indoors, GPS once a shipment leaves the gate.

is even the right fit.
