ankitWhat Does Aanvit Feel Around His Brother I find myself, more and more, watching four-month-old Aanvit when he is near his big brother Riank, and wondering: what is he actually feeling in there? What goes on inside that tiny mind when his two-year-old brother is close? It is a question I cannot answer for certain, but I cannot stop asking it, because the answer, whatever it is, is one of the most beautiful mysteries in my life. 🤍 We tend to think of newborns as simple, as not feeling or perceiving much yet. But the more I learn and the more I watch, the more I suspect that Aanvit's inner world, even at four months, is richer than we imagine. Something happens in him when Riank is near. His eyes track his brother. His body responds. There is a change in his whole demeanor when the big loud wonderful presence of Riank enters his world. He feels something. I just cannot know exactly what. 🌱 I imagine that to Aanvit, Riank is one of the most fascinating things in his entire small universe. A newborn's world is faces and voices and movement and warmth, and Riank is all of those, concentrated into one endlessly interesting, endlessly moving little person who is always around. If I had to guess what Aanvit feels around his brother, I would guess: fascination, comfort, curiosity, and the earliest stirrings of a love he has no words for and no understanding of, but feels all the same. 🌟 And it goes the other way too, of course. What goes on inside two-year-old Riank's mind about his baby brother is its own mystery, a toddler's tangle of love and curiosity and confusion and tenderness. Between the two of them, in the space where a newborn's mind meets a toddler's, something is happening that neither of them can express and neither of them will remember, but that is real and forming and beautiful. 🤍 This series is my attempt to wonder about that space, to imagine what goes on inside the minds of my two boys when they are around each other. I cannot know for certain, no one can, the inner world of a baby and a toddler is largely closed to us. But I can watch, and wonder, and imagine, with all the curiosity and love a father has for the secret inner lives of his children. 🌟 So what does Aanvit feel around his brother? I do not fully know.
